Chance UK Mentoring

An evaluation by randomised controlled trial of the Chance UK mentoring programme

About

Project lead: Nick Axford, PhD

Chance UK is one of the organisations involved in the Realising Ambition project, an initiative to nurture and evaluate promising and evidence-based interventions across the UK to prevent anti-social behaviour in young people.

Chance UK uses a solution-focused approach to improve the behaviour of 5-11 year old children through 12 months of one-to-one mentoring by trained and supervised volunteers. It operates in several boroughs of Greater London, and has replicated the mentoring programme in two new boroughs as part of Realising Ambition. The project seeks to evaluate the impact of the intervention.

Our role

We are undertaking a randomised controlled trial (RCT) of the Chance UK mentoring programme.

The first part of this involves working with Chance UK to ensure that the intervention is evaluable. This includes developing a logic model, refining the intervention manual, developing fidelity tools and analysing the need and demand for the intervention.

The second part involves undertaking randomisation, collecting outcome data from school staff and parent/carers and monitoring implementation fidelity. The outcomes are children’s behaviour, emotional well-being, self-esteem and self-efficacy.

The third part of the project entails writing a report on the method and results and disseminating the findings.
