An evaluation by randomised controlled trial of a therapeutic parenting programme
Project Lead: Nick Axford, PhD
The Malachi Community Trust is one of the organisations involved in the Realising Ambition project, an initiative to nurture and evaluate promising and evidence-based interventions across the UK to prevent anti-social behaviour in young people. Inspiring Futures is a therapeutic parenting programme developed and delivered by Malachi for parents of children aged 6-11 years with behavioural and emotional difficulties.
The programme involves 10-12 weekly group sessions and a subsequent one-to-one component lasting 6-12 weeks for parents identified as needing extra support. The programme operates in Birmingham and Somerset. The project seeks to evaluate the impact of the intervention.
We are undertaking a randomised controlled trial (RCT) of the Inspiring Futures parenting programme.
The first part of this involves working with Malachi to ensure that the intervention is evaluable. This includes developing a logic model, refining the intervention manual, developing fidelity tools and analysing the need and demand for the intervention.
The second part involves undertaking randomisation, collecting outcome data from parents and monitoring implementation fidelity. The outcomes are children’s behaviour, emotional well-being, coping skills and self-efficacy, and parents’ parenting practices and empathy towards their children’s needs.
The third part of the project entails writing a report on the method and results and disseminating the findings.

A report containing the evaluation results will be produced in 2017. Papers based on the project will also be submitted to peer-reviewed journals.
